How to calculate your rising sign

Your rising sign (ascendant) is the sign that was climbing over the horizon at the exact moment you were born. It changes roughly every two hours, so your birth time matters a great deal.

What you need

Your date, time and place of birth. With the place we work out the latitude and time zone, and with the time we find which sign was rising on the eastern horizon.

What it shows

The rising sign speaks of how you present yourself and how others sense you at first impression. It is the front door of the birth chart, alongside the Sun and the Moon.

What if I don't know my time?

You can check your birth certificate or ask your family. Without an exact time the rising sign stays uncertain, but the Sun, the Moon and the planets can still be read.

The reading ends here; the conversation, if you wish, begins now.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate my rising sign without my birth time?
Not accurately. The time is what defines the rising sign; without it, the result is only an estimate.
Is the rising sign the same as my sun sign?
No. Your sun sign depends on the day; your rising sign depends on the time and place.
